Celeste Haller- Living Environment Teachers
at Westbury Middle School
We have only one planet and some of my favorite 4,6,8, and 10-legged friends live there and share it with us. Through our Safari program at Westbury Middle School, the students in our district learn to care and respect these animals in an interactive and hands-on way. They learn about the animals’ habitat, adaptations, and nutrition by actually having a conversation with a trained middle school Safari guide.
When students read about and research Global warming, deforestation, pollution and ocean acidification, they recognize that these are very real threats to the animals and plants we interact with. When a student holds an iguana, a chinchilla or one of the other rescued animals in our care, the impact is further. When students leave our program they pledge to be a positive impact on our planet.

As a biology teacher for 11 years, the past four in AP Biology and Science Research at Patchogue-Medford High School. A clinical exercise physiologist, Jennifer made a career change from cardio-pulmonary rehab to K-12 science education to facilitate the development of young minds with excellent problem-solving abilities, this love of learning has extended to doctoral work at Stony Brook University, where she will complete her PhD in Science Ed this fall. A love of research is brought forth into the classroom, to educate our young people in the important role they play personally, in reducing the use and reliance on plastic, and conserving energy by being mindful of their surroundings, and how they interact with the environment to help create awareness regarding protection of Earth’s resources for future generations including their own.
