First Graders at Herricks’ Denton Avenue Elementary Meet Local Wildlife with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation

Education. During his 45-minute program, Mr. Gelardi shared his knowledge and passion for local Long Island wildlife through a “Meet the Animals” experience.

Students were delighted to learn about a variety of animals native to Long Island, including a turtle and a snake. Through this hands-on and interactive program, students had the opportunity to see the animals up close and learn about their unique characteristics and behaviors. Mr. Gelardi also provided insights into how each animal survives in its distinctive habitat and how humans can help protect these local creatures.

The visit from Mr. Gelardi and the “Meet the Animals” program provided a valuable opportunity for Denton Avenue first graders to learn about the natural world and engage in hands-on, experiential learning. By fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the environment around them, students are better equipped to become responsible citizens and advocates for environmental conservation.

We would like to extend our gratitude to Mr. Ron Gelardi for sharing his expertise and enthusiasm with our students, and for inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.
