Happy Labor Day

On behalf of the 60,000 Teachers that live and work on Long Island, I would like to wish you all a Happy Labor Day.  As active union members, this is our holiday, the only holiday dedicated to the social and economic achievements of the American worker. This Labor Day, teachers are once again under attack from wealthy hedge fund billionaires who are set on privatizing public dollars through sub par charter schools, one has even been selected to run the Department of Education.

Whether you are a union member or not, working people as a whole reap the benefits that unions have created. The very existence of organized labor is in jeopardy with the challenges to our right to collect dues which scheduled to be heard by the Supreme Court in the next year.

Even here in New York, our rights are in jeopardy with a Constitutional Convention, that could strip our members of their pensions and more. Voters will be deciding in November whether or not to call a Constitutional Convention. As union educators, we have an obligation to inform people of this extremely dangerous fact. With our students heading back to school in the coming days, we must continue to educate the general public about the importance of supporting their local union teachers by voting No on the upcoming Constitutional Convention

Happy Labor Day from Long Island Teachers and as school districts across Long Island are heading back into session, please drive safely.
