New York State United Teachers issued the following statement today on the state Board of Regents’ rejection of a SUNY Board of Trustees Charter School Committee recommendation to authorize new charter schools in Wyandanch and Central Islip:
“While the SUNY Trustees would rather cover their ears, we’re thankful that the Regents are taking care to hear the significant concerns of Long Islanders opposed to the creation of new charter schools in Wyandanch and Central Islip. These communities have been clear: Albany’s focus needs to be on fully funding and supporting public schools that serve all students. We applaud Chancellor Young, Commissioner Rosa and the Regents for listening and standing up to those who would rather rubber stamp new charters than take a hard look at what’s right for these communities. Looking ahead to the legislative session, we will continue to advocate for charter school law reforms, including changes to the authorization and approval process.”
