As the school year winds down, teachers on Long Island have been busy. Some districts are fighting for better contracts and are still working with no security. Education leaders and school administrators are working together across Long Island to find ways to protect students during a school shooting and lobbying our State Senators on decoupling student test scores from teacher evaluations. A fair system of testing must be found, and having actual classroom educators at the table is the only way to make the process fair for our students. As our teachers prepare for summer, teachers unions are also preparing to fight back against the Supreme Court case Janus v AFSCME. This decision would make Right-to-Work a national law and will immediately lower teaching standards. Below we have provided some news stories highlighting the work that our local teachers are doing with some videos showing why teachers on Long Island plan on defending their students, protecting their craft from money-making interest and sticking with their union to protect and defend the rights we have to bargain collectively. Have a great summer and to all you high school grads out there congratulations! Consider becoming a teacher and join is in making a difference everyday!
