The Nassau County PBA, DAI and SOA sponsored a back to school backpack giveaway for local youths. One thousand backpacks filled with school supplies were given away to hundreds of children and parents at Martin “Bunky” Reid Park in Westbury. It was a day filled with sun, music, food and lots of smiles!
“This is something we look forward to every year” said Nassau PBA President James Carver. “It’s a terrific way for our police officers to get together with the community in a very positive way. The kids get to come out, pick out a backpack and talk and laugh with our officers.”
Carver went on to say, “one of the keys to being a successful student is to be prepared and today’s event will help make sure that happens.” Some of the police officers even brought their own families to the event to help out! Fifth precinct police officer Mark Casella said, “my daughter was disappointed she wasn’t able to come last year, so this year, she made a point of being here. She’s really enjoying the day.” This was the third year that Nassau police unions sponsored the giveaway.
